Freddy Austbo Wins Red Bull Nanshan Open

*Words/photos courtesy of Snowboard Magazine*

As the 12 qualifiers from the previous day’s competition took to the Quiksilver Nanshan Mellow Park for day two of the 7th Red Bull Nanshan Open, feelings were mixed as the wind that plagued last year’s event threatened to dampen yet another Nanshan Open. However with this year’s improved setup and some solid tucking down the in-run by the riders, enough speed was gained in practice to be able to utilize the smaller of the two kicker lines and the competition was on!

After the morning session, some radical riding and some heavy deliberation from the judges, the results really were too close to call. Markus Keller and Tyler Chorlton ended up in a dead tie for 4th place, and thus 5 riders would advance through to the Super Finals. Markus and Tyler joined Atsushi Ishikawa, Freddy Austbo and Kalle Ohlson for the afternoon’s showdown.

An obvious crowd favourite at the 6th Red Bull Nanshan Open, Freddy Austbo unfortunately failed to place highly in last year’s event, unable to gain enough speed against the wind. This year, however, things would be different, and as the winds increased in the afternoon Freddy morphed into the ultimate aerodynamic machine, becoming one of the few competitors to comfortable clear both kickers. “I’m so stoked. This year I didn’t use Kalle’s wax and bought my own instead, so I was actually able to get some speed! I can’t wait to celebrate at karaoke tonight…” Freddy took home first place and 500 TTR points with a winning run consisting of a BS540 off the first hit, a Cab540 off the second, a BS180 up on to the wave box and a Cab540 off. Freddy finished his run with a rock-and-roll to fakie on the wallride.

Preview: Designer Music Release #2

Music has changed into a disposable commodity. Many people seem more interested in the private affairs of their favorite artists than their music. It often appears as if the music is secondary to sneakers, clothes, hats and gadgets. Some artists view their craft solely as a platform to launch merchandise. As a result, many mainstream acts invest more time developing their public image and product lines, and less time perfecting the music.

Designer Music is an exclusive, limited line produced by us in collaboration with Chace Infinite of Self Scientific and designer Kevin Sanchez. The series is inspired by the images and sounds that shaped Golden Era Hip-Hop. For those that know, the caps are intended to pay homage to the songs they represent. For those that don’t know, prepare to be educated and elevated. Each Designer Music release is produced in quantities limited to the year the song came out and sold at only select Elm Company dealers. Here’s a teaser of the second installment from the series.

Coming soon.........

New Years Eve

Hope you all had a great New Years Eve. Our party was a hit in more ways than one. The crowd was larger than expeceted and definitely more than the Fire Marshall would've liked. I was sober (designated driver) and still had a good time. The dancefloor was getting punished all night and free product was getting tossed out on the regular. The night eneded in your standard Big Bear brawl, which I luckily missed because I was driving some degenerates home. But I got back just in time to pick up a few more drunken friends and see the cops carrying away a few angry tough guys. Apparently it was a full-on royal rumble while I was gone. The next day was full of exciting tales of drunkeness. Too many to tell here (and probably too explicit anyway). But hey, nobody died or ended up in the hospital (or at least I didn't hear about it).

Anyway, here's a few photos.

SlipMatt, playing his usual eclectic assortment of tunes.

This is how Gabby's night started. It ended with her winning as drunkest person of the night.

Scott Pence came in a close 2nd behind Gabby.

.......you can form your own opinion on this one.
